You are not dead until you are forgotten

Henry Ayres

Henry Ayres initialy joined the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment as Private 6414 but at some time during the war he was transfered to the 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment as Private 34939.

On the 9th March 1917, at the age of 35, Henry was killed in action whilst in Iraq. Henry has no known grave.

As well as the St Augstine's memorial, Henry is also commemorated on Victory Park gates in Addlestone, St Paul's church memorial in addlestone and by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the Basra memorial. During his time as President of Iraq, Sadam Hussain moved the basra memorial from its origional location to the desert outside Basra. Unfortunately due to the political position in Iraq, the memorial was substantialy damaged after the move and it is not currently safe for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to restore it or even assess the damage caused.
