The son of Mr and Mrs J.A. Bavin of Rydings Cottages, Liberty Lane, Addlestone, William was born in West Croydon, Surrey. He was living in Guildford, Surrey when he recieved his call up papers and it was here in 1916 that he enlisted as Lance Corporal SPTS/4045 in The Royal Fusiliers, 23rd Battalion, City of London Regiment.
Less than a year later William was serving at Courcelette in France and it was here that he was killed in action on 30 January 1917. William was 35 when he died and is buried in Courcelette British Cemetery. Williams death was reported in the Times News Paper on page 6 of the Thursday 1st March 1917 edition.
