George Bailey
The son of Charles and Ellen Bailey who lived in Addlestone, George was a gardener who worked at Binfield Park, Berkshire, and prior to this at Rivermead in Addlestone. Only one month after the start of The Great War, following Lord Kitchener's call to arms, George walked in to the recruiting office in Reading, Berkshire, and enlisted as Lance Corporal 10735 in A company of the 5th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales, Royal Berkshire Regiment.
George was sent to France on the 30th May 1915 and in October of the same year found himself fighting in the battle of Loos. During this battle he sustained wounds to his head which resulted in his being sent to the Number 3 Base Hospital in Le Treport, France. It was here, on 24th October 1915, that George died of his wounds. He was 22 years old when he died and is buried in Le Treport Military Cemetery.
During the war Le Treport, approximately 25 miles North of Dieppe, was an important hospital centre with Number 3 General Hospital being established there in November 1914 and, only three months later, Number 16 General Hospital was opened there in February 1915.
